PDI is the UK National Training Awards winner 2009!!
The National Training Awards is a prestigious award given for committment and achievement in training and education. The National Training Awards are delivered by ukSkills on behalf of the Department of Business Innovation and Skills in association with the Department of Emplyment and Learning and others , At a glittering gala ceremony at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London on December 10th, Mary scooped the UK award.. Marys entry 'was considered to be outstanding, exemplary and truly inspirational' and they were impressde by her' passionate approach to training nurses' by the panel of judges.

Plymouth University have approved PDI's cervical sample taker's course for academic credits toward a degree level module. Following successful completion of the basic course.a piece of written work is required. Anyone wishing to go thrugh this process should contact the University APEL Coordinator

Recent and ongoing projects.
Devon.
Mary continues to provide cervical sample taker courses that are commissioned by PCTs in Devon and Cornwall. These are the two day courses for new sample takers as well as half day updates. In addition, immunisation and travel updates, family planning and sexual health updates have also been run this year. these have been very well attended and consistently highly evaluated. Mary continues as an external examiner for The University of Exeter as well as providing study skills and dissertation writing sessions there for post graduate students.
Oxford.
Mary provided a two day cervical sample takers course for Oxford Deanery in March 2009
Dorset
Gerry Hinton provided a teaching session for gps in Dorchester on ' Management for the Modern G.P' with excellent feedback. Mary provided an update for last year's HCA cohort on influenza and pneuomococcal vaccination. She has recently provided a second two day course in September 2009 in Poole, Dorset. This time it included Vitamin b12 and Tetanus injections.
Devon
Mary commissioned Jon Bell and Richard Wood to provide a spirometry and inhaler course at Buckafst Abbey on the 21st May 2009. Feedabck from one delegate' This is the best course I have attended in 25 years of being a nurse- thank you.'
Oman
Dorf Ruscoe recently travelled to Oman.to deliver management and leadership training to middle level nurse managers. The purpose was to support a leadership strategy for primary care. It seems very likely that Dorf will travel there again in 2009
International Project News
Uzbekistan
Mary was commissioned by a Danish agency to provide a 'Training of Trainers' programme in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2005 for 25 doctors who are involved in a TB programme. A management course was also commissioned and Gerry Hinton one of PDI's consultants, undertook this training in October.
Mary travelled again to Tashkent again in February 2006 and evaluated the work of the trainers. The results were very promising and the trainers rose to the occasion to proudly demonstrate their new teaching skills.
Egypt
Mary travelled to Egypt in October 2006 after being commissioned by NICO of northern Ireland to train family medicine nurses in primary care. Training took place in Alexandria and Menofia and included health promotion principles, weight loss, stop smoking , asthma and cervical cytology. This short project wasclosely linked with the faculty of nursing in Cairo and was very favourably received.
China
Mary travelled to China in Feb/ March 2007 with a representative of the Royal College of General Practitioners to talk at a series of seminars and meetings on primary care nursing in Shanghai, Nanjing and Hangzhou.
Mary travelled again to China at the end of May 2007 to present a day of seminars about community nursing. She travelled this time to Wuxi independantly and not for the RCGP. As a result of this it is hoped that funding will; be available from the Chinese government to support a two year programme of training in China by PDI. Despite the hectic schedule, time was found for an unforgettable Chinese foot massage.
A delegation of Chinese officials will shortly visit the UK to observe the work of a primary care nurse It is hoped that training of trainers courses will then be provided in China by PDI next year.
Thailand
Mary travelled to Thailand in December 2007 and again in January 2008 with Sue Cross to provide a leadership programme for nurses in Thailand and to help to encourage the nurses to be involved in the development of primary care in Thailand.The Thai Nursing Council were extemely pleased with the change in behaviour and the demonstration of new found assertivenss skills. Students identified blocks to chnage and developed action plans to take their suggestions forward. They presented their plans of action on the final day to senior people from the Ministry of Health. Students from academic institutions who attended the course, accepted the new ways of learning enthusiastically and have alreday taken recommendations back to their institutions to introduce them into their curriculum.
